Profile

After studying electrical engineering at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany) and being on military duty for 12 months (shortened to this duration due to political developments between eastern and western Germany in that timeframe), I have been working in software support for multi-user computer systems for over 13 years.

During my employment in software support, I was mainly dealing with the proprietary HP 3000 platform with its MPE/iX operating system, the Image/SQL database, various programming languages ranging from Pascal and COBOL to C and Java, as well as network services like telnet and ftp or netbios, http, odbc and jdbc. With integration of the platform into heterogeneous environments, I also added Windows, Unix and Linux skills. Private interests in the area of Open Source software and porting, as well as web technologies also fit in.

In addition to the core tasks in phone based customer support, I performed consulting, technical presentations as well as teaching activities. Part of the consulting tasks was in the area of migration projects, the teaching assignments covered typical classroom-trainings like "system management" or "system operating", as well as custom-developed workshops on subjects like Java programming language, Windows file and printer sharing with Samba, or web technologies based on Apache and Java.
